The Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) has come and gone again this year, showing off the latest in hot trends for both spaces. Many of the same trends that have been upcoming for the last few years – texture, natural surfaces and textures, and a move away from stainless steel – are getting new life again this year as well. In addition, one of the hottest trends to emerge for the first time in the bathroom after getting great use in the kitchen, is the customization of the space.

Gone are the days of cookie cutter bathroom designs where the space measures 5x7, the tub/shower is at one end and the sink and toilet line the adjacent wall. Today’s bathrooms are making better use of every space, with details and fixtures that fit your life and your use – not necessarily the masses.

Kitchens have been following this trend for a while now, right down to bespoke appliances made of metals such as copper. Bathrooms are beginning to catch up, however, making every inch of the space work for the user.

Ways to Customize Your Bathroom

There are a lot of ways you can customize your bathroom, even if you don’t have the space to change the floorplan of the room. Start by adding those little touches that will help streamline your use of the space, and help you get more out of it.

• Love to take baths rather than showers? Invest in a soaking tub, rather than a standard 14-inch deep model. Soaking tubs can be as short as 4-feet, yet be as deep as 25-inches, allowing you to sit up and soak comfortably in even the smallest bathroom.
• If you enjoy showers more, consider adding a shower tower in place of your standard shower head. Shower towers give you personalized control over the temperature and volume of the water, and have optional body sprays and a hand shower as well, so you can customize how you shower each day.
• If your bathroom is on the chilly side, invest in either a radiant heat panel or a towel warmer for your wall. Now you’ll always be toasty warm when you step out of the bath or shower each day.
• You can even invest in custom made accessories and fixtures. Companies exist that will make custom sinks for your vanity so you can get the exact size and shape that works for you. Or, invest in a custom made towel warmer to enable you to hold all of your family’s towels in the space you have. Split finishes are also very popular right now; opt for a faucet or set of accessories that can be produced to order with more than one finish to get the look.
