Making the Most of a small bathroom

Making the Most of a Small Bathroom

In an ideal world, everyone would have spacious bathrooms with plenty of room for all their needs. In reality, however, many people have small bathrooms that are seriously short on space. And as you attempt to fit in all the things you need, you end up trying to decide what it is that you need to sacrifice. There are ways that you can do more with your small bathroom, however, no matter what it is you want to achieve there, no sacrifices required.

Utilize the Room’s Corners

If you think about it, your bathroom probably has plenty of space that isn’t getting used, and lots of space that is getting over used, or that have competing needs. What many people don’t realize is that it’s possible to rearrange the layout of a bathroom to free up more usable space.

One way is to try installing fixtures in the corners of the room, rather than along the walls. Toilets, shower, and sinks all have corner options available, which mean that you can free up wall space for things like linen towers, cabinets, and accessories. By making better use of the space as a whole, you can find the room more spacious than you previously thought.

Consider Different Orientations

You know that you need items like towel rails in your bathroom, but if you don’t have a lot of wall space, it can have you resorting to things like rings or hooks that don’t hold as much. Try thinking outside the box instead, and purchase a rail or rack that extends into the room, rather than along the walls. You can find all sorts of accessories, including luxury items like towel warmers, which only take up a few inches of wall space before extending inward. So now you can hang your towels between the sink and a wall cabinet without sacrificing function.

Consider Moveable Storage

Storage is usually the first thing to go in a small space, but that doesn’t mean that you can necessarily do without it. When you’re tight on space, consider making your storage mobile, rather than fixed. Wheeled storage cabinets and carts allow you to move the things you don’t need as often to a hall closet or another room entirely, then roll them in as needed.

Plug-in, freestanding towel warmers are another good option for gaining function and saving space. Just move the whole thing out of the room when not in use; you can even use them to warm bedding on a cold day when you’re not using the bathroom, then simply carry them back into the bath when you ready.

Create Visual Space

Sometimes a small room can feel smaller than it really is when you’re not making the most of it. Instead, try to make the space appear larger than it really is to visually open it up.

Use cool colors, which recede from the eye to make walls appear further away. Get your fixtures up off the floor by investing in wall hung options to make the floor space appear larger. Choose fixtures and flooring with clean lines that don’t clutter up the space. All of these tricks will make your eye believe that the bathroom is really bigger than it is.

Make the Most of Your Small Bath

Small bathrooms may be short of space, but they don’t have to be short on function or style. Make the most of your small bathroom to find the hidden space inside.
